The history of the massive and majestic colored sandhills at Rainbow Beach is fascinating. Aboriginal myths and legends are based on the following…
Murrawar was a black, beautiful maiden in Dream-Time. She fell in Love with Rainbow who visited her every day. Burwilla took Murrawar to be his slave, a beautiful, black woman. He had a huge boomerang filled with evil spirits that was bigger than a tree.
Burwilla followed Murrawar on the beach with his deadly boomerang. She called out for help and her loyal Rainbow raced across the sea to assist her. Her brave Rainbow was attacked by the evil boomerang, who roared in rage. The boomerang died instantly, but Rainbow was broken into tiny pieces on the sand and left to die. The rainbow waits in the dunes on the beach. Her colours will always be a part of the hills.
Aboriginal women of many tribes traveled long distances in order to obtain a small container of this sand. They put it in their hair believing that the brave Rainbow was their protector and charm.
